Out in the middle of a lake… lightning and thunder… water pouring into the boat from the waves… the boat being pounded and slammed by the unrelenting chop of the water… wind blowing the rain into stinging droplets hitting my face… fear and adrenaline coursing through my teenage mind and body! Finally huddling under the bow of my grandpa’s homemade fishing boat as my dad and grandpa steer the course to shore.
Have you ever thought you were going to die? The storm came up so quickly and the waves were so large… I really thought that it was the end… the shore was so far away. But in the midst of it all… the two men I looked up to… the two men that shaped my thinking, gave me strength and confidence, stayed the course, and fought the storm. Ultimately, we made it to shore with an amazing shared story.
When the storms of life pound me now… when the sting of difficulties seem overwhelming, I remember that day and the faith those two men exhibited. But even more… I remember the story of how Jesus save his disciples.
Luke 8:23-25 As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”
First of all… from a purely human response, I can’t imagine sleeping through a storm. My experience was terrifying! But then I think about Jesus, who participated in creation… God himself calling me to faith and to dependency on Him… the true source of confidence and strength. You see… we can depend on Jesus to carry us through the storms of life. We may be capsized, shipwrecked and even lose our earthly life but we know that this life is not the end. The one whom the winds and the water obey is the one who has chosen us to be his people… the one who gives strength… whom we can have confidence in… it’s this Jesus who protects, saves, and delivers. And… it’s in the stories about how Jesus has rescued us from the storms of life that we can share this good news with others. We’re in this together… with Jesus.
There is nothing in this world that doesn’t answer to Jesus. Have faith in him alone and don’t give up.
What storm are you in now? Where is your faith?
